Danube Celts Silver Alexander the Great Coin
Danube Celts Silver Alexander the Great Coin
About this Piece
Danube Celts IMITATION of the Alexander silver Tetradrachm from 2,300 years ago. Depicting the head of young Heracles clad in lions skin which has been tied at the neck on one side. On the other, Zeus enthroned holding an eagle on an extended right hand and a scepter held in the left. An ivy-leaf is seen beneath his throne.
The Ancient Celtic peoples of Eastern Europe were hired to fight as mercenaries for Macedon in Ancient Greek wars. When payed, they received Silver Tetradrachm coins with Alexander the Great on them, the coinage of the time. Once returning home, they made their own version of the design, copying the coin from the 2nd-1st century. Making this a VERY old imitation of another famous coin.
16.20 gram silver coin measuring 1.25” across set in solid 18k gold pendant hanging approximately 2” long from chain (not included).
