Alexander Korzer-Robinson
"The use of antiquarian books makes the work at the same time an exploration and a deconstruction of nostalgia. We create our own past from fragments of reality in a process that combines the willful aspects of remembering and forgetting with the coincidental and unconscious."
Based in the United Kingdom, artist Alexander Korzer-Robinson tells stories through the meticulous manipulation of the antiquarian books with which he creates his sculptural art. Often working with outdated encyclopedias, Korzer-Robinson's work focuses on objects that have been stripped of their utilitarian value by the passing of time but through their alteration take on new meaning, insight and perspective.
The pages with text have been methodically and cleanly cut away to reveal the images as they were printed in the book, still attached to the binding, in their original positions. Depending upon the story that Korzer-Robinson desires to tell, he saves or removes certain images to that end, to highlight the willful aspects of remembering and forgetting our pasts.
