Septarian stone is a variety of geologic concretion with angular cavities or cracks referred to as “septaria”, derived from the latin word for “partician”. Stone of this variety was formed during the Cretaceous period some 50 to 70 million years ago when the Gulf of Mexico reached inland to what is now Southern Utah.
